The lecture was taken by two design students who did an exchange, called Greg and Tiago. They talked about the work they did over there and some of their projects. It was really interesting as I’d like to go overseas and study later on.
They mentioned blogging was important part of the system in the other school which made the class a community who shared all their research.
Some of the projects they talked about included golden leaf on a light bulb, a design that connected to cables and told you if there were active so you could turn them off and save power – think green.
Also the falling motion of a leaf was adapted into a working machine; there was motor controlled music, Sleep detector machine. They mentioned one of the tutors was Osman Khan who is a designer. The projects included using technology cleverly.
The difference between disciplines is changing.DM and IDDN are connecting.
They said there was an Exchange fair on the 9th of April and to plan early.\
They were interesting to listen to and seemed to have an expanded outlook on things. What exists in your environment? The school you go to shapes the designer and don’t just work project, project, project!

Urban ism is a continuous interlocking web of different components. Bodies have expanded to the size of the planet. The world has become a computer, one brain.
HE talked about open source which I think is a good idea. It’s like a buying a car, if its open sources you can look at the engine and change the colour and add a power booster. If it’s not open source the bonnet is welded shut you can’t change anything.
Remix and Mash up culture:
Negativland: Guns, Christianity is stupid. This is the first I’ve heard of this band and I found it really interesting. Basically it’s a group of American guys who put together bits and pieces of everything and make a song. They made a song called Christianity is stupid, using what the pope said? And later they said there song was part of the reason why a little kid axe murdered his whole family. SO each time this murder was reported on the news they mentioned the song and Negativland. They used the media submissively, very clever. Just shows you who nuts America is.
